What do we feed our hamsters?

Our hamsters are on a diet of a mixture of premium hamster food,fruits & vegetables and human grade organics. We find that hamsters fed on organics and fresh usually grows bigger and healthier and they have very nice coat. MadAboutHamster's batch of 3 weeks old hamsters(that's on this diet) are already the size of a friend's 4 weeks old babies that are fed on normal hamster mix.

What's in the mixture of premium hamster food?

We are feeding them on a mixture of the following brands:

And yes, we have a big cabinet just to store all the different brands.

Organics.

We believe that organics are healthy and highly nutritious for hamsters. Our hamsters love them and we are feeding a mixture of the following:

- Rolled oats

- Bran Fibre

- Wheatgerm (high in protein and good for pregnant hamsters) 

- Buck wheat

- Linseeds

- Barley

- Flax seeds 

- Pumpkin seeds

Other than the ones above, we also feed them organic treats like pine nut, almond and macadamia nut.

Tofus & Mealworms are also well liked by our hamsters. Mealworms may look gross but they are highly nutritious and hamsters in the wild feast on insects.

Fruits & vegetables.

We also like to feed our hamsters a varieties fruits and vegetables every night and they enjoyed it.

Usually, we will feed them at least 2 different kinds of fruits & vegetables each night. Our hamsters are on this diet from young so they take on them readily. Do take note that if your hamsters are not on this diet from young, do not feed them too much as it may cause diarrhea. However, you may start by giving them a little and slowly increase the amount to allow them to get use to it. 

Vegetables and herbs that are safe to feed a hamster are:

  • Alfalfa
  • Apple (seedless)
  • Asparagus
  • Avocado (skinned and seedless)
  • Banana
  • Basil
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel Sprouts - small amounts occasionally - not all hamsters like the strong taste
  • Calabrese
  • Cabbage - should only be fed in small amounts occasionally as too much can cause health problems
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower leaves and stalks
  • Celery
  • Cherries - stones should be removed as they can be dangerous if gnawed
  • Chestnuts
  • Chicory
  • Chinese Leaves
  • Coriander
  • Corn-on-the-Cob
  • Corn Salad
